The story behind it

A chessboard is a map with 64 addresses. A letter tells you how far across, a number tells you how far up — exactly like the grid on a graph in a maths book. Every champion began here, learning the addresses.

What it teaches

Read and plot ordered pairs on a grid: across first, then up.

The story to tell first

A chessboard is a map with 64 addresses. A letter tells you how far across, a number tells you how far up — exactly like the grid on a graph in a maths book. Every champion began here, learning the addresses.

Three questions to ask

  • Why do we say the letter before the number?
  • Which squares share the letter d? What do they have in common on a graph?
  • What changes when you sit on Black’s side — the board, or only your view of it?

Without a screen

Chalk a grid on the floor. One pupil calls a square, another walks to it — across first, then up.
