8by8verse introduces NCR · National Chess Rating

Your Personal Over-the-Board Chess Companion.

🇮🇳 Every Game Counts · #myNCR

Every over-the-board game you play now counts — school, club, district and open events, whether they are FIDE-rated or not. The National Chess Rating is the strongest preparatory rating system for tournament players: it keeps track of all of them, and it is one of ten things your chess ID does — from reading your playing style to scouting your next opponent.

Every over-the-board game counts — FIDE-rated or not.

FAQs

Questions? We’ve Got Answers.

How is my NCR calculated?
Your starting point is simple: already FIDE-rated? Your NCR starts at your FIDE rating — no reset. Never been rated? You start at 1200. After that, every over-the-board event counts — school, club, district, state, open or FIDE-rated. Each result moves your number based on how you scored, how strong your opponents were, what your rating expected of you, and a bonus when you’re clearly improving — the same time-tested maths world chess runs on, explained in plain words in every report. Prefer to watch? See “How NCR is calculated” in the videos above.
What is the criterion of calculation of NCR?
Built on the criteria behind FIDE (Article 8), USCF and DWZ — measured across five parameters of your play, not just FIDE events.
Who developed the NCR formula?
Independently reviewed by 8 GMs, 11 IMs, 6 WGMs and 15 FMs, with renowned retired Mathematics PhDs from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Cornell University.
Is NCR an official federation rating?
It isn’t an official federation rating — and doesn’t pretend to be. But built on the same FIDE Article 8 maths, it’s no less serious — the strongest preparatory rating for the over-the-board tournaments you actually play.
Is claiming an NCR really free?
Yes — claim your rating free. Paid plans add reports and tools, but your NCR and your rating never cost anything.
I’m FIDE-rated. Where does my NCR start?
At your FIDE rating — no reset, no starting from scratch.
I’ve never been rated. Where do I start?
At a baseline of 1200 — and you build from your very first rated game.
How does NCR work with my FIDE / USCF / DWZ rating?
It builds on your existing rating instead of replacing it — seeding from it, counting every rated game in between, rewarding genuine improvement, and giving you real reports, not just a number.
Does NCR work outside India?
Yes — it’s used across 52 countries, with a country-appropriate experience.
