The story behind it

A team captain cannot pick a side by feeling alone. She looks at the scores: the total, the middle score, the one that keeps turning up, and how far apart the best and worst days are. Four small numbers that say a great deal.

How to play

  1. Look at the scores on the chart.
  2. Mean: the total shared equally. Median: the middle one in order.
  3. Mode: the most common. Range: highest take away lowest.

What it teaches

Mean, median, mode and range from a small data set, and what each one tells you.

The story to tell first

A team captain cannot pick a side by feeling alone. She looks at the scores: the total, the middle score, the one that keeps turning up, and how far apart the best and worst days are. Four small numbers that say a great deal.

Three questions to ask

  • One very high score joins the list. Which changes more, the mean or the median?
  • Two players have the same mean. How could you still tell them apart?
  • When is the most common score more useful than the average?
