Jeu de miroir

  • Symétrie
  • Ages 6 to 11
  • About 5 minutes

The story behind it

At the start of every game the two armies are mirror images of each other across the middle of the board. The chessboard is one of the most symmetrical things a child handles. Here you build the reflection yourself.

How to play

  1. Look at the pattern on one half.
  2. Tap squares on the other half to copy it — as a mirror would.
  3. Press Check. Red squares need another look.

Mirror match — Symmetry

Ages 6 to 11 · about 5 minutes · 8by8verse Chess Lab

What it teaches

Reflection in a line and rotation by a half turn on a grid.

The story to tell first

At the start of every game the two armies are mirror images of each other across the middle of the board. The chessboard is one of the most symmetrical things a child handles. Here you build the reflection yourself.

Three questions to ask

  • How far is a piece from the mirror line? How far is its reflection?
  • What is different between a mirror image and a half turn?
  • Where is the mirror line on a real chessboard at the start of a game?

Without a screen

Fold squared paper along a line, mark dots on one side, and predict where they will print through before unfolding.
